What is a Spiral Staircase?
A spiral staircase has a circular or polygonal shape that winds around a central post. At Gatehouse Architectural we offer a range of different steel spiral staircases:
- Standard spiral staircase
- Square spiral staircase
Spiral staircases have been used for centuries due to their excellent space-saving function. Today, standard spiral staircases are implemented everywhere due to their practical benefits and style. The central post offers a stable function and stairs that ascend around it.
Whether you are seeking an outdoor spiral fire escape or a contemporary indoor feature staircase for your living space, we have plenty of styles to choose from.
What is the Difference Between a Square Spiral, Steel Spiral, and Helical Staircase?
Some of the most popular staircase designs are the square spiral, steel spiral, and helical staircase. Here are some comparisons between all three types of spiral staircases, to help you make an informed decision:
Similar to the standard spiral staircase, the square spiral staircase also relies on a central post to support steps which creates a tight design that also maximises space.
By comparison, helical stairs feature a circular path that spirals around a central axis. The main difference, however, is that these stairs do not feature a central post – they are either left empty or filled with non-structural elements.
Our Steel Spiral Staircases
After you have selected your style of staircase it’s time to move on to the material selection. It’s important to reflect on your specifications to select the appropriate materials for your staircase.
At Gatehouse Architectural, we have a broad range of materials, colours and styles to pick from. Here are a few materials you should consider and why:
Mild Steel Spiral Staircases
Our standard steel staircases are constructed from our ZuBar range – vertical mild steel balustrade infills. This solution is available in a range of finishes and colours, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
Stainless Steel with Glass Infills
There are many reasons why our ZuGlass infills are a popular option for stainless steel staircases. Glass panels are long-lasting and durable which is perfect for spaces with lots of traffic. ZuGlass infills also offer a sleek and contemporary design that creates more light in your selected space.
At Gatehouse Architectural, we offer toughened glass infill panels, manufactured with satin-polished stainless steel tubular balustrade posts and handrails. The stainless steel balustrade is available in grade 304 for internal and grade 316 for external applications.
Both of the materials can be top-mounted or side-mounted. We can also provide you with tinted glass panels - if that is what your space requires. If you have any specifications, please contact us regarding glass tint shades.
Mild Steel with Mesh
If you are looking for a sturdy, low-cost option then make sure to browse our ZuPlex balustrades range for our mild and steel balustrades with mesh panelling. Pick from various finishes and mounting options that will suit your space.
The mesh design is popular due to its flexibility in design, colour and material which can easily be adapted to fit the right aesthetic that will match your business or home. Mild steel and mesh panels are also low-maintenance as they are highly durable.
Mild Steel with Wire
Similar to our ZuBar balustrade range, ZuLine includes our standard balustrade but is equipped with two options, horizontal infill rails or wire rope infills.
ZuLine balustrades are fabricated from mild or stainless steel and are available in various finishes. They can be side-fixed or top-mounted.
Mild steel wire balustrades provide a sleek and minimal look for homes and businesses. They have the power to modernise a space which is why they are commonly used in domestic properties. They offer visual appeal and they are also low maintenance.
The Benefits and Drawbacks of Spiral Staircases
Spiral staircases are celebrated for their unique aesthetic and space-saving design. However, while they offer numerous advantages, there are a few notable drawbacks which you should also consider.
Benefits
Space Efficiency
Ideal for compact areas, spiral staircases maximise vertical space without requiring extensive floor space.
Aesthetic Appeal
Their distinctive, elegant design can enhance the visual appeal of both modern and traditional interiors.
Versatility
Available in a range of materials and styles, they can be customised to complement any decors.
Easy Installation
The standard spiral staircase is much easier to install than traditional modular staircases.
Drawbacks
Limited Accessibility
The narrow, winding steps can be challenging for individuals with mobility issues, including the elderly and small children.
Furniture Movement
Moving large furniture or heavy items between floors can be difficult due to the restricted space.
Comfort
The steepness and compact nature of spiral staircases can make them less comfortable for everyday use compared to traditional staircases.
Different Steel Spiral Staircase Materials
When it comes to choosing which type of steel spiral staircase is best suited to your space it’s important to consider the following:
- Location of the staircase (including whether the unit is intended for outdoor or indoor use).
- Volume usage.
- Head clearance.
- Floor-to-floor height.
- Room/floor space.
Once you are clear on these specifications it will become easier to select the most suitable staircase for your space. If you are unsure about your specifications, please get in touch with Gatehouse Architectural for design and installation support.
UK Staircase Regulations
All products from our ZuBalastrades range are all designed and manufactured in accordance with current British/EU Standards of Building Regulations.
For more information on building legislation guidelines, please read through BS 5395-2 in Section K, of The Building Regulations document.
The Applications of Spiral Staircases
We provide spiral staircases across multiple sectors such as residential, commercial, and industrial. All of our balustrades are designed to be versatile, with some materials being more suited to outdoor elements than others.
For example, mild steel balustrades are powder coated which will protect your spiral staircase against the weather. This would be a good option for an external staircase like a fire escape.
Gatehouse Architectural experiences high demands of all client types, and we meet all of our client's unique specifications with high-quality products and efficiency.
Whether it’s external staircases or internal feature staircases for grand spaces, we have a wide range of services and materials to suit your requirements and budget. For more details, look through our specific product ranges or get in touch with us directly.
